The transmission range of BaF2 is from 0.2 to 14?m. Transmission in the VUV is degraded by prolonged exposure to moist atmosphere, but it is not significantly degraded by exposure to high energy radiation. Barium Fluoride is the most resistant fluoride to high energy radiation but does not have VUV transmission of other types. Barium Fluoride is suitable for applications in the IR band (8 to 14 ?m) and is often used as an IRviewport windowfor thermographs. The material is relatively hard but is very sensitive to thermal schock. Barium fluoride is grown by vacuum Stockbarger technique. In addition,BaF2is usually used asscintillatorfor gamma detection.
